What is wisdom teeth? Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?
Our last set of molars also known as the third molars are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. They tend to erupt around the age range of 17 years to 25 years (when one grows wise nough!), however can either erupt earlier or later depending.
With the arrival of wisdom teeth, our dentition becomes a wholesome set of 32. Well, that sounds great so far! Why do they need to be removed then? Wisdom teeth are considered no longer useful due to human evolution. The humans have started having a shorter jaw size these days as compared to the ancient times. Hence, there is room for 28 teeth only and third molars need to push the bone and gums to make a place for themselves within the jaw. Some succeed in their effort to erupt out whereas some get stuck within the bone or the gum layer. The latter are the troublemakers and are known as impacted teeth. Impacted teeth are a great source of pain and swelling as they get easily infected. In cases like these, wisdom teeth will require removal.
Extraction of the wisdom tooth or teeth is the only solution. Generally, upper wisdom teeth tend to be easier to remove than lower ones, and they are more likely to be impacted.
